July 1885

Aldrik sat at his desk, his lip corner turned upward. He had just received a report four hours ago that Lethia had safely arrived at the harbor and that she had boarded the carriage. She should arrive here soon now. He could not focus on his work and had been fiddling through the documents mindlessly. Whatever he read had all failed to register in his mind.

His hand slid through the documents casually again and a particular letter fell out of the pile. Curious, he opened it. His smile soon turned into a scowl. But the scowl was short-lived, for he heard hoofbeats and the carriage at the castle’s entrance.

Finally. Aldrik smiled at himself again.

“Lord Aldrik.” Mr. Ancrum entered the study.

“What is it?”

“Miss Carter has returned, and she wishes to see you.”

Ah, guess Eirene took her to the slum.

“Let her in.”

Mr. Ancrum bowed and brought Lethia in. Aldrik took notice of her glossy hair, dewy skin, and the lime-green outfit he had specifically picked for her.

Well, well. Doesn’t she look refreshed. Aldrik secretly let out a sigh of admiration.

“I hope you’ve enjoyed your trip, Miss Carter,” Aldrik said.

“Indeed, I have. Thank you, my lord.” Lethia curtsied.

Aldrik’s smile grew wider as he now noticed how relaxed her facial expression and posture were. “And your sister?” he asked.

Lethia straightened her back. “She is doing well, my lord. She is excelling and is working hard to pass her exam next semester.”

“That is good to hear,” Aldrik said. “Is that all?”

Lethia hesitated. “I would like to thank you, my lord.”

Aldrik stared at her for a moment and then played coy. “I don’t think I know what you’re referring to.”

Without a word, Lethia kneeled and bowed her head to the ground.

Aldrik jumped out of his chair. “What are you doing?”

“No words could describe my gratitude after I’ve seen the slum, my lord. It is no longer a slum, and it is all thanks to you. I am truly grateful,” Lethia said, her head still lowered.

“Please stand up. I will allow no one bowing at me like a toad.”

“Please, my lord. All those children and women...”

“My deeds are not so significant that it requires such formal display.”

“How can I ever pay you back?

“I-I appreciate your thought.” Flustered and annoyed at Lethia’s sudden sincerity, Aldrik didn’t know what to do but to keep nudging at Lethia’s arms, willing for her to rise. “Do stand up. There is no need to—” Then a particular letter on his desk caught his eyes. A smirk tugged on his lips. “Actually, there is something you could do, if you really wish to pay me back.”

Lethia raised her head. “I will do anything, my lord.”

“Right. Please come forward.”

Lethia rose to her feet and followed Aldrik to his desk.

“Have a seat. And look at this.” Aldrik handed her the letter.

“Why, this is an invitation for Your Lordship,” Lethia said after a while.

“It is, indeed.”

“What does Your Lordship need? I shall fetch a paper and make a list—”

“You’re coming with me.”

Lethia halted her action. “I beg your pardon?”

Aldrik tapped on a specific line on the letter.
